Coronavirus and Food

The sudden resurgence of COVID-19 cases in countries such as New Zealand, Vietnam, and China have again spurred some media talk of virus transmission by food. As such the food industry needs to – again – be prepared with talking points to refute any questions that may come its way.

The U.S. CDC, U.S. FDA, World Health Organization, European Food Safety Authority, China’s CDC, and TAG have continually stated that there is no evidence to support the transmission of COVID-19 through food. As specifically stated by the CDC:

“The risk of infection by the virus from food products, food packaging, or bags is thought to be very low. Currently, no cases of COVID-19 have been identified where infection was thought to have occurred by touching food, food packaging, or shopping bags.”

Additionally, while some of the infected persons in New Zealand did work at an imported foods warehouse, some other suspected origins of infection come from the breakdown of an Australian quarantine program and the potential that port workers may have spread the infection.

Whether or not the origin is eventually determined, continue to reiterate that there is no evidence and no known cases of COVID-19 transmission through food.
