What Do School Openings Mean for Your Business?​

Schools are beginning to open across the country, which means the COVID environment will once again be changing – and potentially impacting your business. Are you ready?
As children return to school, the potential risk of COVID-19 exposure will increase. Even with school protections such as masks, desk shields, six-food distancing, etc., there is really no way to completely eliminate the chances of unintentional (or intentional – they are children) interaction and contact. And if a child is sent home and asked to quarantine, this may result in the need for a parent or caretaker (potentially one of your employees) to stay home to care for the child.
Even if the child is older and asymptomatic, and does not need parental care – or if it is a teacher living with one of your employees who becomes infected – the quarantine could extend to the entire household.
With this newly increased complexity, TAG recommends that you be prepared with a plan, talk with your employees, and enact a plan to accommodate potential increases in absenteeism.

Discuss this changing environment with your workers. Ensure employees understand the seriousness and remind them to let their supervisors know of any school infections or contact of which the employee is informed.

Determine what you will set as your acceptable level of risk – Are you concerned only with close contacts? If a child or spouse is sent home, at what point must your employee also quarantine, etc.?

Are you prepared for increased absenteeism? Do you have any on-call or part-time workers who could fill in if needed? Are you set up with a temp agency?
While the pandemic has been headed in a semi-positive direction (meaning it is not escalating as fast as it had been), we don’t know what direction it will take once schools open. TAG advises that you keep your eyes on the road, have a plan – and give us a call if you need assistance with your program or plan.
