Drowning in Data? Waiting Weeks for COVID-19 Test Results?

With many laboratories already overwhelmed with the growing number of COVID-19 tests that must be processed, some areas are now waiting weeks for results. And now, with schools preparing for return-to-class, professional sports swinging into delayed seasons, and many colleges still hoping to have in-person classes with a semblance of a fall sports season, the COVID-19 testing system is likely to be taxed even further.

Due to the backlog in testing and delayed results, businesses who have been requiring employees with a COVID-19 diagnosis be tested before returning-to-work may want to reconsider. As discussed in TAG’s Recommendations for Industry on July 22, the CDC has begun moving away from using testing as a means of allowing people to be released from isolation following COVID infection. This guidance change, published July 17, is due in part to the limited availability of tests and time to receiving results. Additionally, new studies have shown that individuals may test positive but not be infectious.

This all may feel counter-intuitive if you are in a state in which cases have been increasing; but, as you likely have seen by the inundation of data from different sources of varying reliability on cases, tests, results, deaths, etc., it can be difficult to know just how at-risk your actually area is.

With a team of public health and infectious disease experts who have focused on COVID-19 since the very start, and developed science-based matrices of real and predicted risk areas, TAG can help your business rise out of the sea of doubtful data to help ensure your employee health and protection decisions are the best they can be.
