Key Points

  • The CDC has released factsheets for young adults (ages 15 – 21years old). The factsheets cover a variety of topics, including what test results mean, how to stay safe at the pool or beach, how to wear a face covering and other preventive measures. The graphics demonstrate appropriate mask use for the general public, and can be used to remind everyone of the importance of preventive measures (wearing masks, washing hands, social distancing) while in public!

Recommendations for Industry

Keep On Keepin’ On: Hold the Course.

It’s a new week, but there’s not much new about the COVID-19 situation: the virus continues its resurgence and the daily death rate continues to rise. There are a few changes in the demographics of those getting ill: younger individuals are now accounting for a larger share of new cases. The rise in cases among young adults could likely exacerbate the stressors already on the food industry, which tends to employ younger workers. This stress may, once again, manifest itself in increased absenteeism.

In fact, just last week, the FDA published the informational update, What to Do If You Have a COVID-19 Confirmed Positive Worker or Workers Who Have Been Exposed to a Confirmed Case of COVID-19. While the update does not pose much new information for the industry (it summarizes applicable CDC recommendations), it does reinforce that cases are continuing to rise, and that the industry needs to be focused on both worker safety and continued food safety. With increased absenteeism, food businesses are again facing decisions on cross-training workers, using temporary employees, or simply reducing production. Regardless of whichever direction your business elects to go, it is critical that food safety remain a key aspect of training and that your programs be meticulously followed.

The industry has done well this year in reducing recalls despite the pandemic, so the advice to “Keep on keepin’ on” is just as applicable to food safety as it is to worker safety.
