You Have a Confirmed COVID-19 Case: What Should You Do?

CDC has posted new guidance on COVID-19 testing strategies in critical infrastructure workplaces for when a positive case is confirmed. The guidance provides a three-tiered system for prioritizing worker testing. It starts with close contacts who were most likely to be exposed (Tier 1); then moves to same-shift/different-area workers who may have been exposed (Tier 2); then finally to other same-shift or back-to-back shift workers who may have been exposed in common areas, etc. (Tier 3).

Additionally, the CDC:

  • Reaffirms the potential of asymptomatic person to transmit the virus. The CDC states: “Early experience from COVID-19 outbreaks in a variety of settings suggests that when symptomatic workers with COVID-19 are identified, there are often asymptomatic or pre-symptomatic workers with SARS-CoV-2 present at the workplace.”

  • Breaks down the testing and return-to-work recommendations for each of the three tiers in a flowchart [link here].

  • States that “a testing strategy should only be implemented if results will lead to specific actions.” Their statement tracks withTAG’s recommendations on implementing testing only if you know what you will do with the results.

With all this, it is still complex to determine the best business strategy and testing decisions for the occurrence of a positive COVID-19 case in your facility.  Businesses can continue to reduce risk through the continued implementation of all pandemic protective controls (wellness checks, six-foot distancing, employee hygiene, enhanced cleaning and sanitation, and masks).

If you have not yet developed a strategy for handling the occurrence of positive case(s), or if you want to incorporate testing into your plan, reach out to TAG. We can help.
