Recommendations for
the Food Industry
Maintaining Close Contact Quarantine.

When essential workers are found to have been a close contact of a person with a COVID-19 diagnosis or symptoms, some businesses are finding it difficult to commit to the 14-day quarantine CDC has recommended for those workers. Even though CDC has indicated it is OK for close contacts to return to work with protection, TAG continues to recommend the full 14-day quarantine as much as possible, any amount of time less than that (for essential workers) should be driven by risk percentages and continued lack of symptoms, as follows:

The longer the close contact can stay away and/or continue to work-from-home (aka: the closer they can come to the full 14-day period), the more likely the individuals will come to being 100% noninfectious. Thus, the longer an employee is quarantined, the lower the risk.

The median incubation period prior to COVID-19 symptom onset is about 5 to 6 days after exposure. We recommend 5 – 6 days as the earliest a close contact be allowed to return to work. This is only if no primary or secondary symptoms have been shown.

If the close contact returns to work prior to the 14-day period, wellness screening should be conducted upon arrival and throughout the day. Additionally, the employee must wear a mask (or face coverings) throughout the day, maintain six-foot social distancing, and limit contact with community areas as much as possible. The community areas should be disinfected after use. If at any time, the employee begins to show symptoms, the person should be sent home, immediately.
Again, TAG recommends that the full 14-day quarantine be maintained for all close contacts, but if this is not possible, keep the person out for as long as possible to incrementally reduce the risk to other workers.
Everyone should practice social distancing (more specifically, physical distancing), not only those who are ill or at higher-risk (e.g. older individuals, pre-existing conditions) but also among healthy individuals so we may "flatten the curve".
